The Kokorogake Dojo

Our dojo was originally started as a "cops" only dojo. We taught defensive tactics based on several aikibudo styles. As the years rolled by we began accepting students that were interested in going into law enforcement as a career. In order to join our dojo a cop had to recommend you. However, we began accepting students that had no law enforcement connection at all. A cop still has to vouch for you.

The style of aikibudo that we teach is based largely on aikijujutsu style techniques as well as some karate and grappling. We have techniques from Lau Shihan's style of  Aikijujutsu, Koga Shihan's style of Koga Self-Defense Systems, Denora Shihan's Aikijujutsu, Ibarra Shihan's Aikijujutsu, as well as selected techniques from Isshinryu Karate, Isshinryu Aikijujutsu, and techniques from numerous grappling styles and formal wrestling styles! We call our martial system "Watanabe-ryu Aikibudo." We claim no affiliation with any other schools of aikijujutsu. We are a free standing independent dojo that specializes in survival fighting arts that are based on aikibudo.

We welcome any style of martial art or martial system practicioner to come work out with us. Many of our students are law enforcement officers, corrections officers, and we even have a few federal agents.

We have never charged money for anyone to workout with us or to be a full time member of our dojo. All we require is a real interest in learning our style of defensive tactics. This dojo is not interested in making money. We are only interested in being able to survive a dangerous encounter. Because we are not a commercial dojo, we can impose rigid learning standards that we will not comprise under any conditions. We are not selling a philosophy of life, but rather a work ethic of survival. We believe the more we sweat on the mats, the less we will bleed on the street!

The Methods of Training

Although we do not teach a formal or specific Japanese Martial Art, we do work out in a traditional dojo atmosphere. We believe that the only thing anyone can control in this world is ones self. If we can control ourself in a fight, then we will have a better chance of surving the violent encounter. The formal dojo environment provides a disciplined atmosphere that promotes learning and safety. We also teach respect for each other. Without respect there can be no exchange of ideas. Without respect there is no progress or learning. Respect preceeds discipline! In a violent encounter, discipline is where selfcontrol come from.

Most of our classes are two hours in duration with the usual warm up sessions at the beginning. We learn the techniques by practicing in a two person kata drill format with one person acting as the uke (attacker) and the other as the tori (defender). Almost all classes end with a free style randori session stressing life like close to full force attacks. We believe this is the only way to prepare for real life attacks. We also use multiple ukes versus one tori to enhance the pressure of the defender.

Because our training methods are very close to real life conditions, we spend a lot of time practicing ukemi. Regardless of the skill level of the student, we all practice ukemi in every class. Our ukemi practice is dynamic in nature. Our students suffer very few injuries during practice.

In our classes we also spend a lot of time shifting from a variety of formal and informal stances. This style of practice assists our students if they are attacked out of surprise.

We do use a belt ranking system that is like most other martial arts styles. We do this to indicate the students level of skill. Our system commences with a white belt and progresses to orange belt, green belt, brown belt, and black belt. The teachers in our dojo also wear the traditional hakama of aikijujutsu. Each belt level requires a series of techniques and a randori level that is more advanced than the last belt. In order to become a black belt and teacher the IMAF must review the student's skill level and pass them. This methods assures a quality test and hence, a quality teacher.

Affiliations

We are proud to annouce that we are affiliated with the Independent Martial Arts Federation under the direction of Master Robert Shook. The IMAF is an exceptional organization with outstanding leadership. They do not interfere with the day to day operations of member dojos but are always there to assist in any and all areas of operations. They provide ideas in all areas of operations as well as assist in promotional matters. I would highly recommend any and all independent dojo and martial styles to inquire about membership into the IMAF. You will not be dissapointed. You can view the IMAF website at http://www.angelfire.com/ma/imaf/
