Here are some pictures that have been taken on the mats in our dojo over the years.
In every class the yudansha not only work out but also serve as ukes for the mudansha. These pictures will show you a variety of students of all ages and all walks of life working out together. |
Defending Against A Kick!
This is a good picture of Ashley White defending against a front kick that is being thrown by Jon Barrick Sensei. Ashley is about to step in and sweep Barrick Sensei's other leg.
Multi-Uke Randori!
This is a great picture showing the tori defending in randori against four ukes simultaneously. We use this technique to stress the tori and add realism to the training. This multi-uke randori develops precise and fast movements on the part of the tori. We expect the tori to control the fight. |

Sankajo!
A very expressive picture of two Deputy U.S. Marshals working out. The tori is applying a version of sankajo and the uke is "under the spell." This is a picture taken from the past. |
Jonage Waza!
Barrick Sensei is the uke with the "wild hair." He is about to be tatame bound as Mike Coleman applies his trade mark throw. |
Shoteinage Doctor Deputy!
This is Errol Anderson M.D., a Midland County Deputy Sheriff in action. He is applying a front entering throw and his uke is mat bound in a hurry. |
An Entering Throw In Randori.
George "Chief" Keely applies a skillful Iriminage Omote during a session of randori. The deputy sheriff in the background is looking on while he is on duty. |
Gyakuudedori!
A skillful waza applied as the tori guides his uke down toward the tatame. This is another blast from the past. This is James Neal Sensei as tori as Keely Sensei looks on from behind. |
On The Tatame.
A couple graplers go at it full effort as the watchful teacher looks on. We always have a teacher supervise all mat work to assure each student's safety. |
Boken Waza.
Three teachers, Taylor Sensei, Keely Sensei, and McBride Sensei practice a boken kata together. In our dojo we study the boken so we have an understanding where our techniques come from. |
Hidden Tori!
Lisa Ford is the tori and Errol Anderson is uke in this kata drill. You can't see Lisa but believe me, she is there and "Deputy Doc" is mat bound. |
Dainage uke!
This is a picture worth a thousand words! The uke is taking a really big fall as the tori applies a koryu happo nage waza. This too is a picture from the past. The tori is Harry Little Sensei. |
The Sensei Is Gone!
Stroud Sensei the cop is leaving the scene in a hurry! The teachers serve as ukes a lot to be sure that the students are able to apply the waza they learn in randori. |
A Strong Jonage Waza.
Jon Barrick Sensei is applying a jonage waza against his attacker with great success I might add! |
The Old Teacher With The Young Teacher.
Keely Sensei is explaining the control of "ki" to Jon Barrick Sensei. Keely Sensei spends a lot of time working with the other yudansha. |
